Hino Nanyu: Keeper of the Ancient Characters

Hino Nanyu, born amidst the serene beauty of Yamagata Prefecture in 1961, is an artist who breathes life into the forgotten whispers of the past. His artistic journey began in his 20s when, delving into the world of calligraphy scripts, he encountered a profound treasure: the power of ancient characters. These symbols, far more than mere markings on a page, held the weight of history, a captivating language waiting to be rediscovered.

Nanyu's artistic expression is rooted in the deep well of Japanese calligraphy, a practice steeped in cultural and historical significance.  These ancient characters, the ancestors of modern Japanese writing, were the very threads that wove together the rich tapestry of Japanese literature, philosophy, and artistic expression. Often carrying deep meanings and associations, they enriched the language with layers of nuance, acting as vessels of cultural heritage and historical significance. Understanding these ancient characters is essential to appreciating the depth and richness of Japanese culture and its evolution over millennia. They connect modern Japan with its past, embodying artistic expression, religious practices, and societal values.

Nanyu's solo exhibition, "Dancing Ancient Characters," held at the Museum of Paper Culture in Echizen City in 2019, wasn't just a display of calligraphy; it was a revival, a vibrant dance that brought these forgotten characters back to life. His accompanying lecture, "The Charm and Interest of Chinese Characters Seen in Ancient Characters," offered a window into the captivating world that fuels his passion.

Nanyu's dedication extends beyond the canvas. He authored "The Origin of the Writing Brush: The World of Writing Brushes - Panseidō Unpei Brush: Four Hundred Years," highlighting his respect for the tools that give voice to these ancient forms.  His writings in "Sumi No. 262" ("The Beauty of Heian Period: Progress toward the Restoration of Decorative Paper") and the book "Reviving the Beauty of Heian Period" published by Geijutsu Shinbunsha in 2020 further showcase his commitment to preserving and sharing the cultural heritage embedded within these characters.

Hino Nanyu's art transcends aesthetics. It's a bridge connecting the present to the whispers of the past. Through each stroke, he invites us to delve into a world where history comes alive, a brushstroke on the canvas of time. This rich legacy, waiting to be explored, offers a moment of reflection that brightens the present and enriches generations to come.
