Politeness is one of the most emblematic qualities of the Japanese people. The Japanese sense of courtesy has been handed down to the present day. Politeness should be an outward manifestation of consideration for others and for things. A high level of politeness is an attitude of tolerance, compassion, not hating, not boasting, not offending others, and not seeking self-interest.

Of the seven key spirits of Bushido, the character of courtesy, which is spoken of as the most important matter in expressing human relations, is written in an old expression. The text reads, "In its highest form, politeness almost approaches love. We may reverently say, politeness “suffereth long, and is kind; envieth not, vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up; doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, taketh not evil.” This calligraphy is a meditative reflection on these teachings, intended to evoke a sense of grace and contemplation in its beholder.

Established in 1805 in Nara, Japan, Matsui Bokuundo specializes in producing sumi ink, which is fundamental to Japanese calligraphy and sumi-e (ink wash painting). This ink is created from a blend of natural ingredients, including soot from pine or oil and animal glue, which provides a smooth and consistent flow highly valued by artists. Renowned for its excellent adherence to paper and its long-lasting color, Matsui Bokuundo Ink is favored by professional calligraphers and artists around the world.
