To ensure the authenticity and originality of the artwork, both digital and hard copies of the letter of authenticity, signed by myself, will be provided. This documentation attests to the genuine craftsmanship and philosophical inspiration behind the piece, adding significant value and trust for collectors and enthusiasts of Japanese art.

  • This Shodai ware matcha bowl was originally created in Kumamoto Prefecture, a region known for its traditional pottery. Shodai ware is famed for its simplicity and durability, often featuring bold designs created through the flowing application of glaze. The pottery’s natural resilience has earned it the name Gotoku-yaki, or “Five Virtue Pottery,” symbolizing its resistance to corrosion, odor, moisture, toxins, and time.

When this bowl broke, it was restored using the kintsugi method, where urushi lacquer was applied in layers to create smooth curves along the cracks. The missing areas were filled with lacquer and adorned with raden (mother-of-pearl) and eggshell, elevating its natural beauty. Finally, the gold seams added a touch of elegance, turning the repaired bowl into a work of art that celebrates both its history and its future.
